2010-11 OV Basketball: A New Era

It is very rare that a D-1 athlete walks the halls of a lower division school. It is even more rare to have two D-1 Athletes, and close to impossible to have them playing on the same team at a school like Ocean View. But, whether you believe it or not, Ocean View had two of the most dominant players in Golden West League history on the same team: Anthony Brown, and Avery Johnson. Anthony calls Palo Alto his home now, while Avery is right across the bay in San Fransisco. But their time, as well as Aaron Delgado’s and Ryan Okwudibonye’s time, has come, and passed.

Anthony Brown left some huge shoes to fill for OV this year. How will they fare?

Coach Harris wouldn’t say this was a “rebuilding” season, this is a “reloading” season. Ocean View has won the Golden West League for a countless amount of consecutive seasons, and this year, the goals should be set right at that level. Ocean View lost four of its five starters, but ushers in a lot of talent from its Junior Varsity programs

Point Guard – Billy Keller

The lone four year starter looks to cap off his successful career as a Seahawk with yet another year to remember. Last year, Billy was, of course, shrouded by the insane numbers of Brown and Johnson, but what people missed out on was the role he played in mediating the half court offense. Billy should be expected to be the most important piece of the puzzle in league play.

Forward – Corey Wilson

The next, most experienced, player is Corey Wilson. Wilson has developed into a hybrid forward/center for the Seahawks. Wilson is quick enough to be effective in the low post, and skilled enough to face up against defenders. His size will be important out of conference and in postseason play.

Forward – Trey Gourdine

Gourdine is a physical forward who fights for rebounds and baskets. He’ll fit the general role of the Power Forward or Center for the Hawks. Expect a possible break out season with extended playing time.

While this season most likely won’t end with a state championship, the team should win the Golden West League, and compete in CIF Play. OV’s first tests come next month in the OV TOC, which I’ll have the pleasure of hosting here on DigitalSports.com stay tuned for for our exclusive coverage of the prestigious Ocean View Tournament of Champions.
